Harris Road Cemetery Restoration Part 1

Harris Road Cemetery is a small burying ground in Webster, NY active from around 1805 to 1870. It fell into disrepair over the past 100 years and is now being restored by the Webster Parks Department. Almost all the stones have broken from their bases and are are lying half buried on the ground.

Last month Webster Parks Director Glenn Morell and Scott Banker, creator of The Cemeteries of Western New York Project, brought in professional restoration expert Mark Morton to instruct a group of volunteers including George Baker (President) and Cherie Wood (Historian) of Webster Union Cemetery.

4 headstones were resurrected that day. The headstone of Mrs. Phebe M. Carroll required re-setting on its original base. The base was leveled and the stone re-cemented so it would stay stable in place.

The next stone, a small one, had been buried directly into the ground without a base, had not broken, and was reburied to its original depth—a relatively easy fix. The stone honors Aaron, son of S & E Richmond, died April 25, 1836
